and it could really exist a stupid ban on ABC Family to the use of the word abortion, which wasn’t used in the last 2 episodes that had a strong attatch to it. But after watching last episode, I think the writers did it on purpose.

They didn’t simply avoid to mouth or sign the word “abortion”, they also avoided saying “pro-life” and, by the way they displayed the whole characters’ reactions and internal thinking after hearing the news on Lily and Toby’s unborn child and beyond, it looks like they wanted to avoid saying two words that are so often used in media and daily life nowadays that doesn’t let us think thoroughly on their meaning.

Instead of mouthing or signing “abortion”, they kept considering the facts, the possibilities and what could or couldn’t happen, as well as displayed two different opinions on who should be the one to decide. Although most of the characters portrayed the opinion that believes the mother should be the only one to do the final decision, some ended up trying to push their believes on Toby (instead of directly talking to Lily).

But they didn’t used the word “pro-life” either, to adress those who thought the abortion shouldn’t be an option.

Even if the show may end up being the same ol’ same ol’, I appreciate the fact this show’s writers take the time to display multiple sides an options anytime they adress such important issues. I even appreciate how they try to give different sides to a same thinking or reaction, to show the audience not everything is black or white, that the grey scale is right there in the middle and blurred most of the times.

But, overall, I appreciate that they didn’t try to say what was “right” and what was “wrong”, by giving the main characters in this plot the strong belief they could consider several options and that the last decision was Lily’s and anyone else’s.
