I can’t pick just one:

  1. For Your Eyes Only: You don’t have to share your writing! Once you accept this, writing gets a lot easier. Lots of people are embarrassed to write certain things because they write under the assumption that everything they write will be brought forth. You’re not obligated to share those early drafts.
  2. Just Fucking Make It Up: The biggest world building problem I see is writers being afraid of not doing things by the book. How long can mortal vampires live? I don’t know. Make it up. How does succession to the throne work? I don’t know! Just make it up! It’s fictional! These things and places don’t exist so there are no rules!
  3. Change is OK: You can change anything in your story. Is your character going in a different direction than what you outlined a month ago? Who cares? Not me, that’s who. Change is fine. It’s inevitable. Stories never turn out the way the author originally intended. Change is good.
